Description
An immortal story of innocence, spiritual beauty and miracles is enveloped in gorgeous melodies by P. I. Tchaikovsky. Iolanta, ignorant of her royal birth and blindness, leads a sheltered life in her father’s castle. Everyone at the castle is sworn to secrecy about the princess’ handicap, and wonderers are barred from entering the castle on pain of death. Iolanta’s father, King of Provence, suffers deeply and searches for a cure.
A Moorish physician tells the King that there is a chance of healing if the princess desires to see the light with her whole heart; but that means that she must learn of her blindness. On a fatal afternoon, a young Count Vaudémont walks into the enchanted garden and sees Iolanta. His heart is captured by her beauty. The Count is shocked to discover that Iolanta is ignorant of her handicap. He proceeds to tell her about light and the visual wonder of God’s creation. Will this daring revelation cost him his life or save Iolanta from eternal darkness?
